GLEN WAVERLEY HAWKS VETERANS CRICKET CLUB : OVER 60s
WELCOME:
The GLEN WAVERLEY HAWKS VETERANS CRICKET CLUB home ground is at Capital Reserve, Capital Avenue, Glen Waverley. We have one OVER 60s team in competition.
We encourage VETERANS (OVER 60s) to participate in friendly, but keen, games of cricket and all the social activities that go with these. If you feel you can still handle bat and ball and enjoy the company of peers in this common interest, then we encourage you to join our club.
SCHEDULED GAMES:
In Victoria, club games are played under the umbrella of VETERANS CRICKET VICTORIA. There are thirteen (13) MELBOURNE METROPOLITAN clubs, which include, apart from Glen Waverley Hawks, Warrandyte, Ringwood, Yarra Valley, Essendon, Canterbury, Sunbury and others. REGIONAL CLUBS include Geelong, Gippsland, Western District, Mornington, Benalla.
Similarly, other States and Territories in Australia have popular veteran cricket programs.
Official games are played in summer on Sundays. There is also a mid week Wednesday competition which continues on through the winter months. During the summer season Glen Waverley Hawks VCC play, on average, 12 fixtured games. Members can also participate in any number of the non- fixture/social Wednesday games.
The VCV competition has been strengthened with an increasing number of previous OVER 50s cricketers joining the ranks of the OVER 60s. There are, also, significant numbers of OVER 70s still keenly participating.
ADDED INTEREST:
Many players take advantage of the additional cricket offerings organised and encouraged by Veterans Cricket Victoria, private initiatives and sometimes through individual clubs. Interstate competitions (both for OVER 60s and OVER 70s) are held annually and are very popular. Overseas tours are commonplace, even One Day Test (ODI) Matches against England. Wives and partners are encouraged to join these tours. Overseas cricket tours, with tourist highlights included, have been to UK, Europe, Iceland, USA and Canada, Jamaica, Cuba, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, South Africa, Vanuatu, Samos, China, Hong Kong, Japan and Sri Lanka.
COSTS:
The cost per Sunday game is $15 which covers insurance, equipment and the hire of Capital Reserve and facilities. The usual home side players ‘bring a plate’ for afternoon tea and after match drinks add to a very enjoyable day. It’s also common to meet up with and renew friendships with former team mates and opposition players from earlier years, which lead to many recollections of and yarns about these previous times.
You will be most welcome to visit, practice, and play.
